GARY — The Gary Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the recent death of a 1-year-old child.

An autopsy revealed Najae Musgrave, 1, of the 4400 block of East Sixth Avenue in Gary, died Wednesday from multiple injuries due to child abuse in a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Gary police Lt. Thomas Pawlak said the 911 call initially came in as an EMS call about 11 a.m. on Tuesday for an unresponsive child. 

The Gary Fire Department responded and transported the child to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary before she was transported to University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital.

The child was pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. at the hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Sgt. Michael Barnes and Sgt. Jon Cooros with the police department's Violent Crimes Unit have been assigned to the case, Pawlak said.

As of Saturday afternoon, no one is in custody and detectives are still taking statements and collecting evidence, he said.
