HAMMOND — Police found a 30-year-old man lying wounded in the street last week after a shooting in the city's Hessville section.

Hammond police were dispatched about 11:45 p.m. Thursday to the 7200 block of Montana Avenue, where they found the man on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest, Lt. Steven Kellogg said.

The man told police he was walking when he was approached by another man, who demanded money. The 30-year-old said he gave the suspect $600, and the suspect shot him before fleeing the area, police said.

The 30-year-old was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Ritter at 219-852-2990.
