LAPORTE — One woman is dead after a personal injury crash occurred Monday afternoon at U.S. 20 and Wilhelm Road in LaPorte, the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office said.
At approximately 1:23 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to the crash. Initial investigation revealed a blue 2008 Chevrolet was traveling westbound on U.S. 20.Â
"For an unknown reason, the vehicle veered to the right, left the north side of U.S. 20 and began to travel off the roadway," the sheriff's office said.
The vehicle continued traveling west until colliding with a tree located at the northwest corner of U.S. 20 and Wilhelm Road. The driver was identified as Lashea C. Bird, 40, of South Bend, police said. Bird sustained an upper body injury and was transported to a regional hospital for treatment.Â
The front seat passenger was identified as 33-year-old Kendra L. Murphy, of South Bend. Murphy was pronounced dead on scene, police said.

Toxicology results are pending. This investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.Â
