EAST CHICAGO — Family, friends and constituents of former state Rep. Donna Harris, D-East Chicago, will say a final farewell next week to the esteemed community leader.
Harris' funeral service is scheduled for 12 p.m. Monday at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 300 Wirth Rd., Griffith. Viewing will take place at the church prior to the funeral beginning at 10 a.m. Monday.
Following the service, Harris will be buried at Ridgelawn Cemetery, 4401 W. Ridge Rd., Gary, in a plot adjacent to her husband, Earl Harris Sr., who died in 2015 during his 33rd year representing East Chicago in the Indiana House.
Donna Harris subsequently was selected by Democratic precinct leaders in House District 2 to complete the term of her husband.
In 2016, she opted against running for a new two-year term, and instead her son, state Rep. Earl Harris Jr., D-East Chicago, was elected to continue the Harris family legacy of service at the Statehouse that now totals 41 years.

Donna Harris, 75, died Sunday. In addition to being the wife and mother of state legislators, and a Hoosier lawmaker in her own right, Harris worked 45 years as a unit secretary at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago.
State Rep. Carolyn Jackson, D-Hammond, vice chairwoman of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, said Harris was an effective, bipartisan House member, and an invaluable member of the caucus that's currently led by her son.
"In her short time as a state representative, Donna Harris was a champion for public education, housing, and was a devoted public servant for her district and Hoosiers throughout the state," Jackson said. "Our hearts go out to her loved ones, including her son, state Rep. Earl Harris Jr."
