INDIANAPOLIS | They started from the bottom, but on Tuesday the 12 members of the Thea Bowman Academy boys basketball team were honored by the top political leaders in the state.
The Indiana Senate and House formally congratulated the Class 2A state champion team along with their coach and manager. The team started the season 2-7 before going on to defeat Linton-Stockton for the state title March 23.
State Sen. Earline Rogers, D-Gary, introduced the team members to the 50 senators before lawmakers approved Senate Concurrent Resolution 49, which celebrates the hurry-up play that enabled the Gary charter school team to win the championship.
The resolution was approved later by the House.
Rogers said she is proud the team promotes leadership development mirroring the dedication shown by the school's namesake, Thea Bowman, a Mississippi-born, African-American, Roman Catholic nun.
