INDIANAPOLIS — Democrat Lisa Beck appears to have defeated state Rep. Julie Olthoff, R-Crown Point, to win a two-year term in the Indiana House.

At the same time, state Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, is set to return to the Statehouse for a seventh term after outpolling Democrat Frank Szczepanski in the Porter County election results that finally were released Friday.

Unofficial returns show Beck edged Olthoff by just 245 votes in House District 19, which is composed mostly of east-central Lake County but includes four Porter County precincts.

Beck learned Tuesday night that she won the Lake County side of the district by 504 votes, and was counting on support from her neighbors at Lakes of the Four Seasons in the Porter County portion of the district to propel her to victory.

In fact, Olthoff won the overall Porter County balloting. But Olthoff's margin of 259 votes in Porter County was not enough to overcome the lead Beck built up in Lake County.

Beck said she was happy with the result: "I'm very excited to get going, start working down there (at the Statehouse). Very excited."

She also said that she's going to work harder in 2020 to ensure that she wins votes from both her neighbors in Porter County, where she is precinct committeewoman, and the Lake County side of the district.

In House District 4, which contains the city of Valparaiso and adjacent rural areas, Soliday received 1,946 more votes than Szczepanski, according to the Porter County clerk's office.

This is the second election in a row where Soliday's share of the vote was less than 55 percent.
