Memorial Opera House

The Memorial Opera House on Indiana Avenue in downtown Valparaiso was built for $9,950 by John D. Wilson & Sons. It took less than a year to complete, with the structure completed Nov. 8, 1893, and dedicated Nov. 27, 1893.

VALPARAISO — Executive Director Scot MacDonald earned compliments from the Porter County Council by cutting the amount spent on royalties for productions at the Memorial Opera House.

The county is saving money on royalties because it’s a government entity, and it’s getting a break because of memberships reflected in the dues and subscriptions budget category, MacDonald said.

“Your work in trying to drive royalty costs down is a credit to you and your team,” Councilman Mike Jessen, R-4th, said Thursday during a council budget session.

Rehearsals for “It’s a Wonderful Life” have just begun, and the show is already 65 percent sold out, MacDonald said.
