A stretch of Ind. 8 in LaPorte that was closed during historic flooding in February has finally been reopened.
The Indiana Department of Transportation closed the stretch of Ind. 8 between U.S. 421 and Ind. 39 to first determine the extent of damage from the extensive flooding and then to make repairs.
INDOT engineers performed extensive testing, working to determine the severity of the damage both above and below the driving surface, and also what would need to be done to make the road safe.
Once assessments were complete, a project had to be developed to execute the repairs.
Over the summer, the fix for the flood damage was combined with a previously scheduled bridge project as crews aimed to have both projects wrap up around the same time.
Those jobs wrapped up Friday, and the road is now safe to use, INDOT said.
In the coming weeks, permanent pavement markings will need to be placed as well as a couple of other finishing details.
