VALPARAISO — The Valparaiso Police Department is looking for one good man or woman to hire into the department as soon as possible.
The Board of Works last week approved an emergency hiring policy to add one officer to the department. The deadline to submit an application is July 27.
That potential new officer, however, said Chief Jeff Balon will already have to be certified by the state of Indiana and be in the state's Public Employees Retirement Fund program.
Balon told the board he has one opening to fill through the hiring process. The new officer will have already completed the police academy and would only have to go through Valparaiso's training requirements before being able to hit the streets.
Of the department's 55 officers, five are in the field training program and three of those will have to go on to the 16-week state law enforcement academy program before being able to go into service, Balon said. The department also recently committed to providing an additional school resource officer for Valparaiso Community Schools.
Applications must be completed and returned to the department by 4 p.m. July 27. Applications are available at the Valparaiso Police Department, 355 S. Washington St. Applications also can be downloaded from the department’s website (click the recruitment tab) at valparaisopolice.org and returned.
