Lansing police warning of scam against elderly

Lansing police are warning residents about a scam against the elderly after three men entered a home there Tuesday claiming to be checking utility boxes and stole several thousand dollars.

According to Lansing Police Lt. Dan Sylvester, three men came to a home in the 2300 block of 185th Street Tuesday claiming they were there to check the family's circuit breaker box. While one of the men distracted the family in the basement at the circuit breaker box, the other two went through the home and stole several thousand dollars in case.

The men left in a black pick up truck.

Sylvester urged residents to ask for identification if someone comes to the door unsolicited claiming to be from a utility company or the village or offering home repairs.

"If they are from the village or a reputable company, they will be able to verify (their work) if you call the company before letting them in," Sylvester said.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Lansing Police Department at (708) 895-7150.
