Thunderstorms are expected to continue much of Thursday, and dangerous swim conditions on Lake Michigan are expected through Saturday morning, forecasters said.

Parts of Cook and Will counties in Illinois are under a flood advisory until noon Thursday, which means flooding is occurring or imminent, according to the National Weather Service. The Illinois counties also are are under a flash flood watch until early Friday.

Forecasters warned heavy rain could produce localized flash flooding in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana, especially in areas that received rain earlier this week.

There is a marginal risk of damaging winds Thursday afternoon, particularly south of Interstate 80.

Rain is expected to continue Friday, though it could slowly diminish.

Strong easterly winds are expected to produce high waves along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Illinois and Lake County, Indiana, starting Thursday night.

Drivers should not attempt to cross flooded roads. Parents should keep children away from small creeks and streams and high water in urban areas, along streets and near underpasses, because kids can easily be swept away by rapidly rising water.

At Lake Michigan beaches, strong rip currents and structural currents and waves of 4 to 7 feet are expected. Anyone visiting the beach should stay out of the water, the weather service said.

E. coli levels at Lake Michigan beaches also could rise after storms pass. Check for beach contamination advisories at the Indiana Department of Management's BeachGuard website, https://extranet.idem.in.gov/beachguard.
