Much of Northwest Indiana shut down Friday as plow crews attempted to keep up with a unrelenting winter snowstorm.

Many schools, government offices and businesses closed in anticipation of the weather event.

By late Friday afternoon, snow began falling at an intense rate of 1 inch per hour, making travel hazardous with significantly limited visibility, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service extended a winter weather warning for Lake and Porter counties until 9 p.m. Friday, after more snow developed to the west. LaPorte County was under a winter storm warning through 11 p.m.

Indiana Department of Transportation said conditions worsened Friday afternoon.
