Gallery: Indiana historical markers in the Region

More than 20 state historic markers can be found around Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, some along busy thoroughfares, others along country roads. They memorialize expected topics, like the Region's steel heritage, and more obscure ones, like the Michigan Central railroad's defiance of the state militia in 1874.

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission awarded its Norman Tufford Award “for exceptional dedication and service to NIRPC”  Thursday to  Geof Benson, a member of the Beverly Shores Town Council who has been a member of the commission since 2008.

From a Hoosier perspective, “Mayor Pete” has already eclipsed the late Senators Birch Bayh’s (13%) and Richard Lugar’s (4%) presidential campaigns in their 1976 and 1996 Iowa caucus runs. He has outlasted and out-raised Sen. Evan Bayh and Vice President Dan Quayle in their 2008 and 2000, respectively, presidential excursions.
