A DeMotte man is facing several charges after he attempted to hit and kick a Jasper County sheriff's detective who was questioning him in connection with two burglaries in Roselawn, police said.
Kevin L. Carman, 26, was taken to the Sheriff's Office for an interview Monday after he approached officers investigating a burglary at the Island Grove Trailer Park office and a nearby attorney's office, police said.
Investigating officers found a cellphone and other evidence at the scene, police said. Carman approached officers and asked about a lost cellphone, police said.
During an interview with a detective at the Sheriff's Office, Carman became irate and threw a soda bottle on the floor, police said.
He became belligerant and was ordered to put his hand behind his back because he was being detained in connection with the burglary, police said. Carman then started throwing fist jabs and kicks in the detective's direction.
The detective put Carman on the ground and handcuffed him. Items taken in the burglaries were later found in his pickup truck, police said.
Carman was charged with burglary, theft, attempted battery on a public safety officer and resisting law enforcement.
