A wintry mix of precipitation was expected to begin today and persist into the night, possibly complicating the Wednesday night and Thursday morning commutes, forecasters said.

Rain and sleet were expected to begin by late afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. There was a chance of thunderstorms.

Rain and snow could turn to all snow by nightfall, resulting in up to an inch of snow overnight across much of Northwest Indiana and up to 2 inches through a swath of central Lake and Porter counties.

Drivers should allow extra time for travel and use caution, forecasters said.

In LaPorte County, a chance of snow could persist until 7 a.m. Thursday.

Skies were expected to clear Thursday, with high temperatures rising into the 40s Thursday and Friday and 50s for the weekend.
