ST. JOHN — Students at St. John the Evangelist School are used to the typical curriculum at school: reading, writing and arithmetic. On Monday, students in first through third grade will get a special treat from four-legged friends. Power Paws for Kids will be visiting SJE students in the classrooms, allowing them to ask questions and interact with therapy dogs Emmie and Missy. Students will be learning about the positive impact animals can have on the health and well-being on humans.
“Children are so impressionable. It is important for children to learn at an early age, receive good messages about animals and have the opportunity to experience the positive aspects” said Michelle Lawson-Fairfield, Power Paws for Kids Programs & Special Events coordinator.
Studies have shown the impact therapy dogs make in both the physical and mental well-being of individuals. According to the National Center for Health Research (NCHR) lowered blood pressure, lessened depression and anxiety, improved self-confidence and increased endorphin (oxytocin) release which result in a calming effect are all positive outcomes therapy animals provide.
