Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce invites you to attend the Spring Antiques and Collectibles Show, presented by Lakeshore Public Television, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Industrial Arts Building at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St., Crown Point.

There will be more than 50 vendors showcasing and selling their prized possessions. Attendees will also enjoy live entertainment provided by Five Star DJ and Karaoke Entertainment, and food will be available for purchase from Bubba Q Bar-B-Que. Call (219) 769-8180 for more information.

Art Contest

"Communities Matter" is the 2013 theme for National Library Week, April 14–20.

The Crown Point community does matter to the Crown Point Community Library, which will promote National Library Week with posters designed by its patrons.

Showcase your creative abilities and design a poster with the theme “Communities Matter.” Three winning designs will be chosen and produced as posters to be displayed throughout the library during National Library Week.

Thew Friends of the Crown Point Library will also choose one winning design to be reproduced as the first official Crown Point Community Library postcard. The winning design will be unveiled and copies available for purchase at the upcoming "Presentation and Free Appraisals" by Harley Sheets at 11 a.m. April 6.

Ruby Award presented

Mary Wright, assistant vice president and business banker for Horizon Bank in Merrillville, earned the Ruby Award for her dedication to the community.

The advisers who nominated Mary for the award stated: “Whenever there is a call to action, some people step back and some people step up. Mary knows one direction and it is always forward.”

Wright is involved with the Merrillville Education Foundation, she is the treasurer for Engaging Northwest Indiana Business Women, and serves Meals on Wheels. She was Ambassador of the Year for Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2011 and is a Paul Harris Fellow – Rotary.

Burton “Bud” Ruby, for whom the award is named, has long been recognized for his outstanding activism in local and national concerns, including health care, education and commerce. He has received the human relation’s award by the B’nai B’rith and the State of Indiana’s highest civilian honor, the Sagamore of the Wabash Award.

Free tax services

AARP provides free tax service, by appointments only, in the Tri Kappa Meeting Room at the Crown Point Library, 122 N. Main St.

Appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through April 10. Call (219) 488-9150 and leave your name and telephone number and a representative will call you back to schedule your appointment. Appointments are handled by AARP and not the library.
