Are you tough enough to beat the “beast?"
Hometown Happenings will host the Beast Boot Camp 5K Race at 9 a.m. May 10 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St, Crown Point.
Designed and staffed by U.S. Marines, this event features stations along the course with boot camp exercises. Participants must complete all the stations to be eligible for a top finisher award. While the course is difficult, athletes of all skill levels are invited to participate.
Advance registration is $25, and event day registration is $35. A limited number of shirts will be available for purchase at the event for an extra $10. Anyone who registers can nominate a local veteran they know to receive a free meal up to $10.99 at Carriage Court Pizza. To register, visit www.hometownhappenings.net.
Tourism Week activities
As a kick-off to National Tourism Week, South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority will host a Family Safety Education Day on Saturday at the Indiana Welcome Center, 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond.
Hammond police and fire departments will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to teach children about safety. Events will include children’s fingerprinting, a motorcycle display and K-9 demonstrations.
National Tourism Week will also include Explore the South Shore from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 at the Indiana Welcome Center. Families can visit numerous interactive booths with activities including the Challenger Learning Center’s StarLab, the Gary SouthShore RailCats inflatable ball toss, bean bags, musical chairs and more. There will be a performance by Indiana Ballet Theatre, a magic show, a Hula Hoop Contest and $1 train rides.

OE Celebration of Achievement
Tickets are available for Opportunity Enterprises’ Celebration of Achievement Breakfast on May 13 at Aberdeen Manor, 216 Ballantrae St., Valparaiso. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast and a program from 8 to 9:30.
An awards ceremony will celebrate the accomplishments of OE clients, staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Picnic en Blanc
Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, 71 N. 500 West, Valparaiso, will host Picnic en Blanc, an elegant outdoor affair of food, fanfare, and entertainment by Hey Jimmy at 4 p.m. June 28.
