More than 40 local schools received a four-star school designation for the 2012-13 school year from the Indiana Department of Education.

The award recognizes schools in the top 25th percentile in ISTEP+ testing.

In the state, 311 schools received the award.

Crown Point Community School Corp. has seven schools on the list: Douglas MacArthur Elementary School, Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School, Jerry Ross Elementary School, Lake Street Elementary School, Solon Robinson Elementary School, Col. John Wheeler Middle School and Crown Point High School.

Lake Central School Corp. has three schools on the list: George Bibich Elementary, James H. Watson Elementary and Lake Central High.

Merrillville Community School Corp. has two schools on the list: John Wood Elementary and Jonas Salk Elementary.

School Town of Munster has two schools on the list: Frank H. Hammond Elementary and Munster High.

The following Diocese of Gary schools were recognized: Andrean High School, Merrillville; Bishop Noll Institute, Hammond; Marquette Catholic High School, Michigan City; St. John Evangelist, St. John; St. Michael, Schererville; St. Patrick, Chesterton; and St. Paul Catholic, Valparaiso.

There are six Valparaiso Community Schools on the list: Benjamin Franklin Middle, Central Elementary, Memorial Elementary, Northview Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Elementary and Valparaiso High.

East Porter County School Corp. schools receiving the designation include Kouts Elementary, Morgan Township Elementary, Morgan Township Middle/High, Washington Township Elementary and Washington Township Middle/High.

Duneland School Corp. schools on the list are Jackson Elementary and Chesterton High.

Union Township School Corp. had two schools on the list: John Simatovich Elementary and Wheeler High.

Hebron High School, of MSD of Boone Township, and Boone Grove High School, of Porter Township Schools, received the designation.

In LaPorte County, the following schools were recognized: LaCrosse School, Kingsbury Elementary and Springfield Elementary.

DeMotte Christian School in Jasper County also received the designation.
