Former Dyer councilman joins Lake County elections board

CROWN POINT | A former Dyer town councilman is the newest member of the Lake County elections board.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. announced Thursday he has named Dennis M. Hawrot as a Democratic member of the five-member county panel that oversees voter registration and local elections.

McDermott is the Lake County Democratic Party chairman.

Hawrot is the husband of Dyer Clerk-Treasurer Pat Hawrot and has served as Democratic town chairman in Dyer for 20 years.

He replaces Gregory Sanchez, who stepped down from the board last month to become the chief deputy county surveyor.
