Fire causes minor damage at vacant Lew Wallace High School in Gary

The vacant Lew Wallace High School sustained minor damage during a trash fire Sunday in the auditorium.

GARY — A suspicious fire in the auditorium at the vacant Lew Wallace High School in the city's Glen Park section caused minor damage to the building, a fire official said.

Gary firefighters were dispatched at 6:15 p.m. Sunday to the abandoned school at 415 W. 45th Avenue, Fire Department spokesman Mark Jones said.

According to a police report, two off-duty Griffith firefighters smelled smoke while driving in the area and reported the fire.

Smoke was seen coming out of a broken glass window, police said.

Firefighters searched the building and found a trash fire in the auditorium, Jones said. 

Crews extinguished the fire and remained on scene for about an hour.
