CROWN POINT | A Gary man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of 32-year-old Brandon Sykes, of Merrillville.

Prosecutors on Friday charged Michael Martin Jr., 29, with murder in Sikes' slaying in the late morning hours of Oct. 10.

Sykes, his girlfriend and two friends had been "scrapping" auto parts in the 2300 block of Delaware Street in Gary, court documents show, and they were about to pick up a fender when one of the men went to relieve himself behind an abandoned house.

When the man returned, Martin allegedly appeared and started shooting at a black Chevrolet truck that Sykes was driving. Sykes' girlfriend climbed on his lap to drive the truck down the street away from Martin and begin CPR. Martin reportedly fired at least five shots at the four inside the truck.

Sykes, of the 3300 block of West 77th Place in Merrillville, was pronounced dead of multiple gunshot wounds shortly after arriving at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary.

The incident was one of two in Gary the same morning.

Before the Delaware Street incident, police responded to a call about 10:16 a.m. in the 4900 block of Georgia Street after learning about a male shooting victim. Police said 26-year-old Lorenzo Adams was sent to Methodist hospital in Gary after being shot in the legs.

Police said Adams and his cousin were walking to a store near 41st Avenue and Broadway when a man approached and pulled a gun on Adams' cousin. After Adams disarmed the man, two different men began firing gunshots at him and his cousin. King said Adams fell to the ground after being shot, and the suspects later ran to an area near 46th Avenue and Broadway and fled the scene in a red truck.
