GARY | Gary police arrested six people Wednesday while conducting extra patrols focused on people with felony warrants and areas where violent crimes have occurred.

The Police Department's IMPACT Unit arrested Michael Waddell and Lamarr Anthony in the area of 15th Avenue and Clark Road, police spokeswoman Lt. Dawn Westerfield said.

Waddell, 29, of Gary, was arrested in connection with a sexual assault and on a felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance. Anthony, 30, of Gary, was taken into custody on a city warrant for carrying a handgun without a permit.

In the Aetna section, officers saw several people loitering around a vehicle stopped in the 5800 block of East 13th Place, Westerfield said.

Police activated their emergency lights, and the driver of the vehicle fled, she said. The driver, identified as Kriston Barbee, 29 of Gary, later stopped and was arrested on charges of felony resisting law enforcement, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving and driving while suspended, police said.

Two people who were standing outside Barbee's vehicle also were arrested, Westerfield said.

Devonne Tyler, 20, of Gary, had a handgun and large amount of cash and is expected to face a charge of possession of a controlled substance, she said.

Ashaunta Dear, 20, of Gary, was arrested on a city warrant and a disorderly conduct charge, Westerfield said.

Officers also arrested Isaac Walker, 36, of Gary, in the 300 block of Durbin Street. Walker was wanted on a federal warrant for a weapons violation and attempted to run from police, Westerfield said.
