CROWN POINT | Prosecutors charged a Gary postal worker Tuesday with theft and official misconduct in the auctioning of stolen coupons on eBay.

Rowena Banks, 47, netted $8,989.39 over a two-year period after paying her eBay fees, court documents state.

Banks admitted taking retailer coupons from the mail she sorted at the Gary Processing and Distribution Center, court documents show.

Banks told police she got the idea from having bought coupons off eBay and thought she could make some money because she had access to the coupons at work.

A postal service agent made a series of undercover purchases from Banks' eBay account between May 13 and June 11, tracing the mailing address to Banks' Highland home, court documents state.

A search of Banks' locker at the postal facility later recovered undelivered mail to retail customers, most with missing coupons, court documents state.

Banks allegedly turned over additional coupons in a sealed envelope to post office officials.
