Essay winners write about animal characters

HAMMOND | Hammond Reads honored the winners of its annual essay contest at an event held recently at Morton High School.

Entrants submitted essays answering the question, “What is your favorite animal character in a book and why?” Winners were chosen in six age categories and read their essays to the audience at the event.

Dr. Dennis Rittenmeyer, former president of Calumet College of St. Joseph, delivered an address on the importance of reading and education.

The winners of the Essay Contest in each category are:

Primary I: Hailey Wojtaszek, St. Casimir School

Primary II: Abigail Wojtaszek, St. Casimir School

Intermediate: Jonathan Robledo, Lafayette School

Middle School: Jeremiah Delgado, Hammond Academy of Science & Technology

Adult: Mary Hogan

Senior Adult: Margaret Kowalski
