HAMMOND | The mission of Hammond Reads, Inc., is to build a city of readers.
One way in which Hammond Reads does this is through Project ABC, which gives a book to each newborn at Franciscan St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond.
Hammond Reads recently received a Hammond Community Corporation grant for $750 with which to purchase books. The organization had the opportunity to leverage this grant with a matching "Literacy for a Lifetime" grant from Usborne Books, allowing Hammond Reads to receive $1,500 worth of Usborne titles.
Members of Hammond Reads join Cinda Long, Usborne Books representative, in unpacking the books. Pictured from left to right: Clint Turpen, Hammond Reads president; Tammy Guerrrero; Darlene Kielbasa; Cinda Long; and Linda Swisher.
Other Hammond Reads initiatives are an annual essay contest, and book giveaways at community events. The organization also partners with Hammond Rotary and Telecom Pioneers in the Dictionary Project, which provides a new dictionary to each third grader in Hammond.
Hammond Reads also participates in Time Out for Reading and Books to Bridge the Region. For more nformation, visit www.hammondreads.org, or look for Hammond Reads on Facebook.
