HAMMOND | A new Walmart opened today in Hammond, bringing 300 new jobs, savings on a full line of groceries and an increase in tax revenue to support the area's economy. Nonprofit organizations also benefitted from the retailer's ongoing charitable contributions and support for community projects.
The Hammond Walmart, located at 1100 5th Ave., opened to customers at 7 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26.
"Hammond is very excited about the new Walmart as well as the new jobs and shopping opportunities it creates," said Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr. "We look forward to the many benefits this new store will bring to our city."
According to shift manager Tom Harvel, the new Hammond store employs more than 300 associates. Twelve of the store's associates have worked for Walmart for more than 10 years.
In recent months, Walmart has taken major steps to refresh its stores, merchandising and customer experience. The improvements have all come together in the company's newest stores, such as the Hammond Walmart, with fast service, a friendly shopping experience and clean stores.
The new Walmart features enhanced services and an easy-to-navigate layout designed to make the shopping experience more convenient for customers. Walmart aligned the departments that customers shop most frequently, including health and beauty and pet supplies, which will save customers time as they shop for everyday necessities.
A bright interior color palette creates an inviting shopping experience and helps define the store's merchandise areas. Directional signage on every aisle helps customers find what they are looking for quickly. The store features a full line of groceries as well as a bakery, a deli, a frozen food section, and meat, dairy and fresh produce sections. The new Hammond Walmart offers customers an expanded electronics department featuring a wide selection of the latest consumer electronics and home entertainment. The new design includes a more hands-on experience for customers with interactive displays for hi-definition Blu-ray, video gaming and portable electronics. The interactive experience enables shoppers to test new technology.
A new department called Celebration Station has been added and will feature party supplies, greeting cards, balloons and helium tanks, cake supplies and gift wrap.
Community Organizations Benefit from Grand-Opening Grants
As part of Walmart's commitment to the communities in which it operates, $15,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation was presented during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. These grants were presented to local service organizations, including East Side Community Council, Inc., Fair Haven Center for Women, George Rogers Clark High School Natural Helpers, Hammond Reads Inc., Hammond's Neighborhood Crime Watch, Inc., Hessville Little League, Innermission, Inc., Parents as Teachers of Lake County (PAT), United Citizens Association, Inc., We Care From the Heart, Whiting High School Bands, Whiting High School Athletic Department and the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce.
The new Hammond Walmart, like all new Walmart stores, includes energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. The store's LED lighting in the store operates 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent lighting, including expanded lighting in the fresh grocery areas.
The concrete flooring throughout the store reduces the need for chemical cleaners. Low-flow toilets and no-touch faucets reduce the water used in the bathrooms. The new store also operates a recycling program and will promote sustainable product purchases. The photo department also uses green technology, operating completely without liquid chemicals for photo processing.
