HIGHLAND | The Town Council is looking to neighboring communities for suggestions on handling unkempt properties.
Several councilmen said they are not pleased with what they consider the unsightly appearance of many homes throughout the town.
Councilman Mark Herak, I-2nd, pointed to Grace Street and Wirth Road as examples of the problem.
"The grass is horrible at one of the houses there," he said. "It's 3 feet tall."
Councilman Dennis Adams, D-4th, said some residents aren't maintaining their property.
"You can take a drive around town not looking for problems, but they're right in front of you," he said.
Adams said he has spoken with the police, code enforcement officer and other councilmen about the situation.
To get the ball rolling, Adams said the council has invited officials from other communities to discuss how they handle situations of poor property maintenance.
"I've been in Highland for 48 years and what I see is parts of it are going downhill," Adams said. "And I don't like that — not one bit."
