GARY — Two people were airlifted to a Chicago hospital early Thursday after a fire on the city's West Side, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Gary firefighters were dispatched about 6:30 a.m. to the home near Sixth Avenue and Taney Street, said Mark Jones, chief of operations.

Two people were taken to a local hospital and later flown in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, he said.

Further details were not immediately available, Jones said.
