MUNSTER | A 20-year-old Munster woman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence causing bodily injury after a crash there early Sunday.
Lt. Ed Strbjak, spokesman for the Munster Police Department, said emergency crews responded at 6:55 a.m. Sunday to the two-vehicle accident at Calumet Avenue and Fisher Street.
Strbjak said a white Chevrolet was traveling north on Calumet Avenue and was turning onto westbound Fisher Street when a blue Honda SUV hit it broadside at a high speed on the passenger side.
A passenger in the Chevrolet, a 46-year-old Sumava Resorts man, had to be extricated from the vehicle before being transported to Community Hospital in Munster. He was later transferred to The Methodist Hospitals' Northlake campus in Gary, which has a trauma unit, due to the severity of his injuries.
The Hammond woman driving the Chevrolet, the man's 66-year-old mother, also was transported to Community Hospital.
Karina Del Real, 20, of Munster, was driving the blue Honda and was also transported to Community, Strbjak said. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence causing bodily injury.
The conditions of the three injured in the crash were not immediately available Monday morning.
