GARY — Police are investigating a shooting at 9:52 a.m. Friday that injured a 15-year-old boy who was walking eastbound on Fifth Avenue. 

Police responded on Friday morning to the 2000 block of West Fifth Avenue in reference to a male gunshot wound victim, according to a news release. While enroute, officers learned a male juvenile had been brought to the emergency room at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary.

Officers met with the 15-year-old who had suffered a single gunshot wound to his right leg, the release states.

The teen told the officers he had been walking eastbound on Fifth Avenue when someone in a red vehicle fired a handgun in his direction. He attempted to run but was struck by one of the bullets. Family members took him to the hospital.

Gary officers located a crime scene in the 2000 block of West Fifth Avenue and the department's Crime Scene Investigative Unit processed the scene.
