Starting in January, Bead Town will attempt its fifth Guinness World Record: a mosaic of recycled Mardi Gras beads highlighting 20 locations of Northwest Indiana and the city of Chicago. This two-yearlong project will be worked on in East Chicago, Hammond, Gary, Chicago and other locations. The project aims to create awareness about recycling while promoting Lake County and greater Northwest Indiana.
This is one of 27 programs supported by a Legacy Foundation grant. The foundation’s board of directors approved a round of funding in December totaling $327,171. The grants help local charities provide services to Lake County families and individuals in the areas of arts and culture, community development, education, environmental and animal welfare, health and human services.
Honor Flight Chicago received a grant of $17,500 to send 20 Lake County WWII and Korean War veterans on a one-of-a-kind journey to Washington, D.C., to thank them for their service and sacrifice. Pink Ribbon Society, another grant recipient, will use their funding to underwrite the cost of wigs for women receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy for the treatment of breast cancer.
