Man airlifted, 2 hurt in crash that sent car onto frozen Cedar Lake

CEDAR LAKE | A Cedar Lake man was flown to a Chicago-area hospital and two other men were injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday night that sent a car careening across the ice on Cedar Lake, police said.

Scott Marksteiner, 41, was extricated from his 2001 Nissan after its top was torn off by another car and the Nissan came to rest on ice 500 feet from the lake's shoreline, police said.

Cedar Lake police responded about 9:40 p.m. to the crash at the intersection of Cline Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, according to a news release.

An investigation showed Marksteiner had stopped at the stop sign on southbound Cline at Lake Shore Drive when a 1998 Mercury sedan driven by David Luvin-Guerrero, 20, failed to stop and rear-ended Marksteiner at a high rate of speed, police said.

The Nissan's roof likely was torn off by the Mercury, which traveled over the Nissan, police said.

The Mercury sustained heavy front-end damage and came to rest facing north in the parking lot of the Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce.

Firefighters extricated Marksteiner from the Nissan, and he was taken to a staging area at the American Legion, 13050 Washington St., to be flown by helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill. Marsteiner suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

Luvin-Guerrero, of Gary, and passenger Damon Bonner, 20, of Merrillville, were taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but speed is believed to be a factor, police said.
