Body found in Merrillville

MERRILLVILLE — Police and the Lake County coroner's office are trying to identify a body found Sunday afternoon near a busy commercial intersection.

Police Chief Joseph Petruch said Sunday evening authorities were called to a retention pond on West Lincoln Highway where the body was discovered.

"We don't suspect foul play. The body had probably been there for four to six weeks," he said.

Petruch said they are now looking through missing person reports to find one that matches the person found.

The Lake County coroner's office said they were called shortly after 2:30 p.m. to the location. They could only identify the body as that of a man. They are still investigating the cause of death.
