Police found Jaquan Strong, 19, of Gary, dead in the 400 block of Roosevelt Street after receiving a call at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday about a man down in that area, authorities said.
Strong, of the 400 block of Johnson Street, was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m. from a gunshot wound suffered in a homicide, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
Strong's death marks the second shooting in the 400 block of Roosevelt Road since Saturday. A 22-year-old man from that same block was killed Sunday in a separate shooting 11 blocks away in the 400 block of Fillmore Street, authorities said.
Earlier Wednesday, police met with a woman being treated for a gunshot wound about 3:15 a.m. at a local emergency room.
The 20-year-old woman said she was driving on East 13th Avenue near Lake Street when she felt a sharp pain, police said. She realized she'd been shot and headed for the emergency room.
After giving police preliminary information about the shooting, the woman became uncooperative and refused to give additional details, police said. Anyone with information about the woman's shooting is asked to call police Detective Daryl Gordon at (219) 881-4750.
Wednesday's gun violence follows seven shootings, one of them fatal, last weekend and a double homicide Thursday in Gary.
Police Chief Wade Ingram did not return a call for comment Wednesday.
Two separate shootings Sunday left one dead and two wounded.
