Bikes on trains

WHITING — Reservations are quickly filling up for the June 23 Ride and Rail Tour.

The tour celebrates the increasingly popular activity of biking by giving up to 200 bicyclists the opportunity to ride the trails from Whiting to Chicago's Buckingham Fountain, then board special South Shore cars at Millennium Station for the return trip to Hammond.

The tour is organized by the United Citizens Association Inc., and sponsored by Community Health Systems, WJOB Radio, the city of Whiting, Region Signs, the Hammond Port Authority, the Hoosier Theater, and the South Shore/ Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.

The tour leaves promptly at 9 a.m. June 23 from 119th and Oliver streets.

The bicyclists will return to Whiting in time for a special showing of the ultimate cycling movie "Breaking Away" at Whiting's Hosier Theater, 1335 119th St.

Half of the 200 reservations have been claimed.

Registrations are being handled at https://www.active.com/whiting-in/cycling/races/ride-and-rail-tour-2018. The cost is $25 plus a processing fee charged by Active. The fee includes tickets for the train and movie, a commemorative shirt and discounts to local restaurants and businesses. Any remaining funds will be used to help pay for the hanging baskets along 119th Street in Robertsdale.
