SCHERERVILLE | Lake County Coordinator captain Rebecca Simmons touted the efforts of volunteers Thursday during the Salvation Army's first ice cream social.

It was intended to celebrate the people who make things happen.

"I am very proud of our community volunteers and what they do for the Salvation Army each and every day," Simmons said.

"We helped over 7,000 people in our county last year. We are so grateful for your support because we could never accomplish the things that we do without people who care," she told those assembled.

More than 90 volunteers packed the Schererville Community Center on Thursday to celebrate with root beer floats, ice cream cones and sundaes.

The ice cream was donated by North Star Dairy Rich Ice Cream.

"This was a fun evening," said Tom Ploski, Salvation Army volunteer. "It's wonderful to see people of all ages that have given their time and talents to an organization we are all extremely passionate about."
