Suspect in Schererville slaying in police custody

  • Updated

SCHERERVILLE | A Gary man charged in the May 19 homicide of a 24-year-old Schererville woman turned himself in to police Monday at the Lake County Jail, according to Schererville police.

For more than a month, authorities had been searching for Stephen Lee Henderson, 25.

Henderson, Michael Craig Jr. and William Blasingame III each were charged May 23 with murder and murder in perpetration of a robbery in connection with the robbery and killing of Jacqueline Gardner at her apartment in the 8000 block of Alpine Lane.

Craig, 22, of Merrillville, and Blasingame, 30, of East Hazel Crest, Ill., have been in custody in Lake County Jail since last month.

Henderson had been considered armed and dangerous when he was at large, police said.

Court records show Henderson, Craig and Blasingame waited for Gardner to come home May 19.

Blasingame and Henderson allegedly entered Gardner's apartment building after she returned there. Court records show Henderson had a shotgun with him.

A person called 911 after Gardner was seen on the floor of a hallway.

Gardner was transported to the Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville, where she was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the right side of her back.

Police recovered a 12-gauge shotgun shell in the apartment building, according to court documents. Investigators also determined Gardner's tip money, which she received before she returned home from work, was missing.
