Some local Catholic schools readying for school choice

Andrean High School is among three Gary Diocesan high schools that is accepting students through the Indiana Department of Education School Choice Voucher Program, which allows state money to be applied to tuition at these private institutions.

Students must apply and be accepted through Andrean, Bishop Noll Institute or Marquette High School in Michigan City.

Eligible students had to have been enrolled in a traditional Indiana public school or a charter school for at least two semesters during the 2010-11 school year. Students also will be required to meet individual school academic requirements to be accepted. Families will be responsible for tuition balances after the voucher has been applied.

The Indiana Department of Education said as of Monday, 180 schools statewide have been approved to participate in the program. The department has launched a school choice website at, which has information about specific schools. !~ By Times Staff
