Family: Investigation into teen's sudden death continues

CROWN POINT | Nearly one month after St. John and the Lake County coroner released information sought by the family of a Lake Central student found dead on school property, attorneys for the family say many unanswered questions remain.

Attorneys for St. John and the coroner's office voluntarily relinquished all records requested by the family of Levi Evans Jr. on the cusp of a court hearing Jan. 30 before Lake Superior Court Judge William Davis.

This week family attorney Andrew Crosmer, of the Dyer firm of Rubino Ruman, said it may be awhile before the family can determine what happened.

"There are too many unanswered questions at this point to bring our investigation to an end," Crosmer said.

Among the information obtained following the hearing is a videotape of the boy, who stopped at a Taco Bell near Lake Central before returning to school property, where his body was found Aug. 8 near a NIPSCO substation.

"We still have yet to see the Taco Bell video," Crosmer said. "Apparently, there is some issue with the recording mechanism that we are trying to get resolved."

Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey twice ruled the 17-year-old died of natural causes due to a rare heart disorder, but the boy's father, Levi Evans Sr., of Merrillville, disputes the boy showed signs of heart disease.

Because of the delay in obtaining police records, Crosmer had sought contempt citations against authorities, arguing the family was denied information to which it had a legal right.

Crosmer's action led to a flurry of legal responses by the town and coroner's office, all resulting in the Jan. 30 hearing before Davis.

Davis found the town's complying with disclosure of the records rendered its argument for a protective order moot and denied any remaining requests for sanctions by all the parties involved.
