Breaking waves

Waves break near driftwood at scenic Kemil Beach, which is part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation designating the National Lakeshore as a national park. It is awaiting action in the Senate where the acting director of the National Park Service told a subcommittee Wednesday the administration opposes the change. 

Anyone visiting the Lake Michigan shoreline today should stay out of the water, forecasters said.

Three- to 6-foot waves and currents could be life-threatening, according to the National Weather Service. A beach hazards statement remains in effect until this afternoon.

Rip currents and structural currents, which form along piers, can sweep swimmers into deeper water.

A high around 70 degrees was expected today, but the weather could warm during the long, holiday weekend. Highs in the mid-70s and low 80s were expected Saturday and Sunday, and temperatures Monday could rise into the high 80s.

There is a chance of thunderstorms Monday afternoon, the weather service said.
