GARY — Police are asking for help locating a Gary man who allegedly shot the boyfriend of his son's mother June 16 outside of a Dollar Tree.
The suspect, identified as Garland J. Sistrunk, faces four felonies stemming from the incident near Grant Street and West 23rd Avenue, including aggravated battery and criminal recklessness. A warrant had been issued for his arrest Wednesday, but he remains on the lam.
A woman, the mother of Sistrunk's son, told police she was picking up her child from Sistrunk when the alleged shooting occurred about 11 a.m. that Sunday.
After arriving in the Dollar Tree parking lot with her boyfriend and cousin, the woman said she approached Sistrunk's vehicle. But as soon as she got closer, he drove away. The child wasn't with him.
Police said Sistrunk had pulled up next to the woman's car, which was driven there by her cousin. He then allegedly walked toward it and pointed a handgun at her boyfriend sitting in the backseat, shooting him once.
The woman ran back to her vehicle, and the three drove to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary. Police said the bullet shattered part of the boyfriend's arm. He was flown to a Chicago hospital for treatment.
Anyone with information about Sistrunk's location is asked to call 911 or Sgt. William Fazekas at 219-881-1210. To remain anonymous, call 1-866-CRIME-GP.
