HAMMOND — A Crown Point man was seriously injured in an early morning crash on Interstate 80/94 near Calumet Avenue, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash between a semitrailer and a vehicle occurred about 4:40 a.m. Wednesday on eastbound Interstate 80/94 near Calumet Avenue.

A preliminary investigation shows Tristen M. Riezinger, 22, of Crown Point, was eastbound in a 2008 Chevrolet Impala on I-80/94 near Calumet Avenue in the left middle lane when, for unknown reasons, ran his vehicle into the back of a semitrailer.

The semi, owned by 21st Twenty Transportation out of Frankfort, Illinois, was loaded with 43,000 pounds of shingles on its flatbed trailer.

The semi driver, Luis Sanchez, 33, of Bellwood, Illinois, was not injured, state police said.

Riezinger had to be extricated from his car by the Hammond Fire Department, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Illinois with life-threatening injuries.

Family has been notified, according to ISP.

The crash forced police to close all eastbound lanes Wednesday morning during the investigation, but traffic was getting by on the shoulders.
