A crash involving a utility pole and a problem in a substation caused power outages early Tuesday for thousands of NIPSCO customers in Whiting, East Chicago and Valparaiso, a company spokeswoman said.
The outage in Valparaiso affected more than 1,000 NIPSCO customers, including Porter Regional Hospital. Power was expected to be restored by 8:30 a.m., the spokeswoman said.
Ind. State Road 149 between 1000 North and Old Porter Road is expected to be closed until 3 p.m. Tuesday because of downed power lines.
More than 2,000 customers were without power Tuesday morning in Whiting and East Chicago after a problem in a substation near 129th Street and Riley Road, NIPSCO said. The company on Tuesday morning corrected earlier statements that the outage in Whiting and East Chicago was caused by a downed utility pole.
The majority of those customers saw their power restored about 8 a.m.
The Tuesday outage in Whiting was unrelated to a previous outage Monday, NIPSCO said. Monday's outage in Whiting was caused by a large tree limb, which fell on a transmission line that affects a larger number of customers.
