Thousands of people were without power Wednesday morning as strong winds continued to whip through the Region.
NIPSCO reported as many as 6,000 customers without power in the northern Indiana region, which spans most of the northern third of the state. Locally, outages of nearly 1,500 hit Highland and Schererville.
By 12:30 p.m., the outages were reduced to 500 customers throughout northern Indiana.
Tara McElmurry, spokeswoman for NIPSCO, said the utility responded to more than 150 different outage locations Wednesday morning. McElmurry said the outages were largely the result of fallen tree limbs on power lines and poles due to strong winds.
"We have extra crews dispatched," McElmurry said. "As always we thank our customers for their patience."
The National Weather Service forecast sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph gusting to 35 to 40 mph through Thursday afternoon.
