CROWN POINT | Witnesses Tuesday gave conflicting testimony about if a suspect in a fatal shooting was intoxicated the night gossip intensified into several confrontations.
Karl D. Smith, 31, of Gary, is on trial this week and faces a charge of murder in the shooting death of James Anderson.
Anderson, 20, of Gary, was shot March 18 and died at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary. Dr. Young Kim, of the Lake County coroner's office, testified Anderson died of a gunshot wound to the left chest area.
Smith and Anderson attended a party that early morning in the 900 block of County Line Road in Gary. Smith's sister, Kisha Tyler, testified she and her husband also attended the party, which was held at her stepdaughter's apartment.
Tyler testified she told her stepdaughter that Smith's girlfriend was spreading a rumor about her health.
In response, the stepdaughter tried unsuccessfully to find the woman. She then started to hit Smith outside the party until the altercation was broken up.
Tyler's husband, Tyrone Tyler, testified he saw Smith leave the party and did not appear intoxicated, though he saw Smith and Anderson together at a liquor store before the get-together.
However, Kisha Tyler testified her brother was drinking at the party but he was not stumbling drunk.
After the altercation, Kisha Tyler and her husband left the party to go home. While outside their house, her stepdaughter ran up to them saying Smith had just shot Anderson.
"I was just in shock," Kisha Tyler said. "I was shocked. It was like he didn't know what he did."
The state played a 911 call for jurors where a woman is heard saying, "he got shot in his chest." The caller asks police to go to the 900 block of County Line Road in Gary. Another woman in the background is heard crying and saying, "Oh my God."
The trial is expected to continue Wednesday.
