Would-be dirt bike buyer robbed of $600 in E.C., police say

EAST CHICAGO — A man was robbed of $600 Friday after meeting a person in East Chicago to buy a dirt bike, police said.

The man told police he met another man at a Calumet City shopping center who offered to sell the dirt bike and they exchanged information, Lt. Marguerite Wilder said.

The man later received a text message from the suspect, who asked that they meet in a parking lot in the 4700 block of Indianapolis Boulevard, she said.

The suspect picked up the man in a brown Ford vehicle, drove him to 150th Street and Baring Avenue and told him to wait in a hallway. The suspect returned a short time later with a gun and pointed it at the man.

The man dropped the money and fled the building, Wilder said.

She said residents can deter any potential risk during similar transactions by using the Public Safety Facility building as a meeting place.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call detectives at (219) 391-8318. To remain anonymous, call (219) 391-8500.
