Leigh Morris is stepping down as the LaPorte County Republican Party chairman.

Morris, the GOP chairman for a year, said much of his focus has been on upgrading the organization of the party to achieve better results in future elections.

He said now is the time to hand over the reigns to someone who can move forward with the party structure in place.

Morris, 79, cited time constraints from his duties as chairman of the Legacy Foundation in Lake County and private consulting business for deciding to resign March 31.

"It's going to take a strong leadership team and more time that I'm going to be able to provide for it," Morris said.

Morris was mayor of LaPorte from 2004 to 2007 and is a former president and chief executive officer at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

He's held other positions with the Indiana Toll Road, Indiana Department of Transporation and the Regional Development Authority for Lake and Porter counties.
