LA PORTE — The city's annual Cruise Night got off to a fiery start Saturday when a Hudson Lake man crashed a vintage Ford Mustang through a fence and became airborne over Ind. 2 before slamming into a tree.

The 72-year-old driver was behind the wheel of his white 1966 Mustang in the LaPorte County Fairgrounds parking lot when his foot became entangled between the brake and gas pedal, LaPorte County Sheriff Capt. Mike Kellems said Saturday.

The crash happened about 4 p.m. near Nursery Road and Ind. 2 at the start of LaPorte’s annual Cruise Night car show event, he said. The driver also struck a couple of cars participating in the event.
