LAPORTE | A LaPorte man was flown to a Chicago-area hospital after a head-on crash that shut down a stretch of Ind. 39 north of LaPorte.

Daniel Lopez, 57, crossed the center line Friday striking an oncoming vehicle driven by Travis Kennedy, 27, of Stillwell, about 2:30 p.m., said LaPorte County police.

Lopez had to be extricated from his SUV. Police said he had cuts and bruises to his head, a broken wrist and was not able to speak.

Police said Lopez was taken to a Chicago-area hospital.

Kennedy told police he moved far to his right to try to avoid the collision, which occurred near County Road 450 North close to the Indiana Toll Road interchange.

The highway was closed for several hours to allow for cleanup.
